How To Get Ahead In The Music Industry

Brighton Underground and The National Music Network are pleased to announce
the launch of the UK's first practical training programme for the music
Industry. This exciting new scheme is open to anyone in the South and is
designed to help people gain valuable hands on experience in every aspect of
the music Industry.
The music industry is notorious for being one of the most competitive and
difficult industries to make your career in. It is also one of the most
popular with an increasing number of people wanting to get involved. In
response to this demand Brighton Underground's Music management and market
training programme offers a unique opportunity for people to learn from the
professionals.
Set up in 2001, Brighton Underground is a non-profit organisation, which
provides support for the local music industry. Its unique work has recently
attracted substantial funding from the South East Development Agency
(SEEDA). This new funding has enabled them to launch this training
initiative and to expand the support and advice services that it currently
provides.

The programme covers three main areas; 'Band Management', 'Forming A Record
Label' and 'Starting An Events Promotions Company' and provides a good cross
section of experience. The projects will run over the course of a year and
include hands on experience, mentoring, training, work experience and
guidance from Brighton Underground and a variety of experienced industry
professionals.

The scheme is still in its early stages, but already has had very positive
feedback from the staff at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM),
industry figures, and the students taking part. The course has attracted a
large number of keen volunteers, which is partly thanks to the efforts of
Jon Stewart a teacher at Brighton Institute of Modern Music and former
guitar player for Sleeper and Laura Davidson a former pupil of BIMM.

Peter Carr of Brighton Underground said; " We are delighted to be able to
offer volunteers this unique opportunity to experience so much about the
music Industry. We understand the importance of experience and aim to give
new blood the opportunity of entering the competitive music industry. "

The music industry in Brighton is worth about £200 million and is a
significant part of the business and cultural side of Brighton and the South
East.
"I think that giving Brighton music focus is invaluable. Often at Brighton
Underground events you'll meet someone who's got a night on or someone whose
mate is a producer or DJ. You never know who you are going to bump into."
Matt Fernand, BBC Radio One, One Music.

NMN is committed to allowing people to contribute and not just listen.
Anyone who wishes to be part of it is welcome. So if you have just three
hours a week free and fancy yourself as a bit of a Pete Waterman or the next
best thing to the Beatles, perhaps Brighton Underground can present you with
the opportunity and experience of a lifetime.

Brighton Underground is part of the National Music Network. It is a
non-profit organisation that supports people working in the music industry
in Brighton and the South East. The National Music Network is a growing
national network of people and organisations involved in the music industry.
Its aim is to provide information, advice and opportunities to anyone
involved in the music industry regardless of status or experience.

Whether you just want to chat with other people involved in the same
industry, advertise your local gigs, get advice on legal and other business
issues, find a band member, see what other local artists are doing or just
about anything else, NMN can help.

The organisation was established in mid 2001, and membership stands at
approximately 2000. Membership is not restricted. The vast majority of
members are creative entrepreneurs.

What the music industry says about Brighton Underground

"I think it's important for musicians and record labels to get advice from
other people who have been in that situation before. It's all to do with
who you know - connections are important. I think it's all quite daunting if
you area young musician, not knowing who to speak to and what moves to make.
Just to get some feedback on their music is all really constructive."
Dean Marsh, Music Solicitor (Paul Weller, Ms. Dynamite, Fat Boy Slim,
Sugababes)

"Five years ago Brighton was a little satellite, a sort of feeding ground
where there were one or two little labels and a few acts coming through, and
London picked up on that. But now Brighton is quite quickly developing this
infrastructure where it's getting to the point where London doesn't even
have to be a part of it. There's a whole bunch of labels down here, there's
managers down here, there's venues here, publishers here, lawyers here.
Brighton has its own infrastructure and that's great: it's starting to stand
on its own two feet."
Andy Mac, A&R and Marketing, Skint Records.

"I think it's great that people meet up and talk, and are made aware of what
other people are doing and of their ambitions, that can't be a bad thing at
all. Anything we can do to help we will always try and do. "
Gareth Hansome, founder, Big Beach Boutique

"Breaking new bands and new talent is the most exciting part of the
industry"
Mark Jones, Founder, Jeepster Records (Belle and Sebastian, Ian Mucolloch,
Snow Patrol)

"The music industry in Brighton is worth about £200 million, and is a
significant part of the business and cultural side of Brighton, and the
south-east. Brighton Underground, with all its members has a positive
programme with which to broaden that business base and bring it forward and
make it grow." Alan Searle, SEEDA.
National Development Programme
The National Development Programme has been established to assist new talent
in the UK. It is set to bring new and experienced artists and industry
professionals together through a variety of methods. Such methods include;
Live Performances, UK tour networks, Workshops, Demo Panels, Seminars,
Comprehensive advice and advice from experienced industry professionals.

The scheme is to take place over the course of a year. It is broken into
three projects; 'Band Management', 'Forming A Record Label' and 'Starting An
Events Promotions Company'.

It's a well known fact that Club and Radio DJ's receive advance promotional copies of the hottest new dance tracks several weeks before their official release. These DJ ONLY copies are usually on 12" vinyl, have alternative packaging, and often include exclusive remixes never to see the light of day elsewhere. These factors make them highly collectable to fans, and ferociously sought after by less privileged pub/bar/mobile dj's searching for that exclusive track to instantly pack out their dancefloor, and earn them a degree of respect normally reserved only for the 'big name' DJ's !

Whether you are a DJ, a collector, or just have a passion for good old fashioned vinyl, we can help put you at the cutting edge by supplying the very latest DJ ONLY PROMOS ! CLICK HERE FOR LISTING

CAR INSURANCE ? - I've just been looking for car insurance, (and what an nightmare that can be !), but while I was looking I came across an excellent home contents policy from Masterquote. OH ! and my top 3 car insurers, well Masterquote has to be there, as does the AA and that dog that Churchill use ! (I'm not keen on dogs anyway. I prefer cats !) Masterquote gets to be top though, because the form is oh ... so ... simple ! Sally
